Hobby turned Obsession turned Business Idea
It started with cabin fever.
I decided to spend some time being a stay-at-home mom to my two kids, Riley and Darby. Being a little on the restless side, sitting at home day-in and day-out waiting for the kids to get out of school began to drive me batty. My hubby, David, suggested I pick up a hobby. In retrospect, he probably regrets that suggestion!
So I headed to my friend’s local craft shop where I begged her to teach me how to turn the colorful beads into beautiful, jeweled creations. $10,000 on a credit card later (yes, might be a smidge obsessive/compulsive), my house ran rampant with stones, pearls, and findings. The aforementioned accountant-of-a-husband insisted that I “get rid of some of these $*%!@ beads.”
Thus, Smart Parts Crafts was born.
The shop started in the garage. The orders grew. The inventory blossomed. Beads were all over the house! Before long, the shop overflowed the garage.
So, Smart Parts Crafts moved to a sweet little warehouse in Colleyville, TX, with pretty colorful walls, a ton of creative energy, a rockin’ teaching studio, and a lot of laughter that probably annoys the neighbors 🙂
And this is where the magic happens, where orders daily ship to customers around the world.
Lisa makes all your packages pretty, bubble-wraps the heck out of them, and flirts a little with the postman. And she is the lovely voice you hear when you call our studio or email us with questions.
BFFs Shelby and Jordan help carry the company with various sorting, counting, and distributing processes that are necessary for harmonious efficacy. Their bubbly energy keeps us all cheerful around here.
Darby does a little of everything, and she runs her own company, KissAFewFrogs.etsy.com. She’s developing enough delightful sassiness to be her own boss someday.
Riley keeps all the technology up-to-date, which satisfies his “button-pushing-tinkering-engineer” tendencies.
David keeps the company out of IRS trouble and still firmly believes that “less inventory is better.” Everyone else disagrees, so he’s not invited to play very often!
Gershom is our resident graphic designer, laser specialist, and the one that keeps new designs coming. He has a thing for fandoms, and he is a published author in the awesome sci-fi genre.
Karin is our Inventory Countress Extraordinaire (yes, that’s her official title).
To us, “staff” is a dirty word. We prefer to be called a family.
